Some included cutting edge research that has not yet been published so the powerpoint is not yet available to post here. Wednesday, April 6

1. Team Presentations

Each of the finalist teams in the 2016 Pellet Stove Design Challenge had an opportunity to do a presentation on the design and operation of their stove and how they achieved improved performance. Moderator: Rebecca Trojanowski.

2. Pellet Stove Design:

How has pellet stove design evolved over the years, and what innovation has succeeded. Why do many heat exchangers still appear to be undersized? Most stoves on the market continue to have far too much excess oxygen. What are the trade-offs and barriers to lowering oxygen, expanding heat exchangers and other design options?

3. Repeatability & Testing of Popular Pellet Stoves

Panelists will discuss factors that impact repeatability and reproducibility in pellet stove testing. How does real world performance of pellet stoves compare to lab performance?

4. Air Quality and Pellet Stoves

5. Policy and Regulator Issues

Panelists will address the NSPS and how its impacting pellet stoves, the new, voluntary hangtag, how BTU heat output is calculated on the list of EPA certified stoves, among other issues.

6. Pellet Stove Testing Workshop 1

This workshop takes place in lab 815 and involves testing with portable emission meters made by Testo and Wohler. Portable equipment can be an efficient way to prepare for certification testing.

7. Pellet Stove Testing Workshop 2

This workshop brings attendees into lab 526 to show how stoves are tested for EPA certification under a dilution tunnel and how filters are pulled and weighed to measure particulate matter.

8. The European Pellet Stove Market

Emissions standards are tightening in Europe and “green labels” are pushing pellet stoves in Europe to become cleaner and more efficient. Testing protocols are also being consolidated. How will these changes impact the technology and the market for pellet stoves in Europe? How will these changes abroad impact the North American market?

10. The Development of Automated Cord Wood Stoves

In Europe and North America, several new and existing companies are developing and marketing wood stoves with automated combustion controls. Will there be a demand for these stoves? What are the technical and regulatory hurdles? Do they function well enough yet?

11. Retrofit technology: from prototype to deployment

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency held a retrofit technology competition for wood stoves, and after extensive testing found three prototypes that met strict PM reduction goals. Panelists will discuss the next steps toward deploying this technology and barriers that need to be overcome.

12. Commercial Efficiency Protocol Development

This panel will explore an accepted testing protocol for the seasonal thermal efficiency performance of commercial sized boilers.

13. Deployment Strategies for Pellet Stoves

Panelists will review incentive and change-out programs for pellet stoves and assess their successes and challenges. Panelists will also address the importance of eligibility criteria, workforce development, measurement and verification, and other program goals.

14. Ultra-fine particles from bark and wood

Panelists will review the science of health impacts of wood smoke with a focus on nano-particles, including differences between smoke from bark and wood.
