Change-out Programs

(Statewide)

Updated October, 2020

Commonwealth Woodstove Change-out

Massachusetts

Status: Suspended

Location: Statewide

Eligible fuels: Wood (uncertified) -> wood (certified); pellet

Notable feature(s): Program provides higher incentives to automated wood stoves and includes an efficiency adder to stoves with verified disclosed efficiencies of 65% or higher.

Incentive Amounts
The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) offers homeowners $500-$1,750 rebates to replace operational uncertified stoves with pellet stoves, fully automated stoves, and catalytic or non-catalytic woodstoves that do not exceed emissions thresholds (3.5 g/hr for non-catalytic wood stoves, 3.0 g/hr for automated wood stoves, 2.0 g/hr for catalytic wood stoves, and 2.0 g/hr for pellet stoves). Rebate levels correlate with stove emissions levels and automated wood stoves are provided higher rebates. An adder of $250 (wood stoves) or $500 (pellet stoves) is provided to stoves that have a disclosed tested efficiency of 65% or higher. Income-based rebates range from $1,500-$3,000.

Program Duration
This has been an ongoing program and is likely to return, but is suspended as of 2020.

Procedure
Residents must sign a sales agreement with a participating stove professional, who replaces the stove, disposes the old stove, and submits the application to MassCEC for reimbursement.

Requirements
Homemade or modified uncertified stoves that were not built by a woodstove manufacturer are not eligible for the program. It is only open to homeowners. Some localities in Massachusetts ban or limit the installation of wood-burning appliances in new construction.
